Stylus Studio 5 XML IDE Adds Industry Leading Saxon XQuery Processor Support for Seamless XQuery Development

Bedford, Mass.July 21, 2004 — Stylus Studio (http://www.stylusstudio.com), the leading provider of powerful development tools for XML technologies including XML, XSL, XSLT, XML Schema, Web Services, SQL/XML, and XQuery, has added new support for Saxon, the industry's first processor to combine XQuery and XSLT 2.0 support, to its XQuery development tool set.

"I've always been a reluctant user of IDE's in the past, but I now use Stylus Studio for all my XML work," said Michael Kay, developer of Saxon and leading authority on XSLT and XQuery technologies. "The XML vision of open access to distributed information depends on development environments that integrate the core technologies such as XQuery and XSLT. Saxon has always been designed for integration into such environments, and Stylus Studio has always been designed to allow components like Saxon to be seamlessly embedded, so there is a natural fit. The result is an XML IDE that manages at the same time to make the tools accessible to novices, and to enhance the productivity of experienced developers."

Dr. Kay is the author of "XSLT Programmer's Reference" from Wrox Press, which is generally viewed as the definitive reference on XSLT, and the editor of the W3C's XSLT 2.0 specification, currently a "Last Call" Working Draft. He is also an invited expert on the W3C XQuery W3C working group, and a joint editor of the XPath 2.0 specification. He has recently set up his own company, Saxonica, to develop and support the Saxon technology in response to its increasing adoption for business-critical applications.

"Serious XML developers and industry experts like Michael Kay have long recognized Stylus Studio as the most powerful XML IDE in the industry, particularly for advanced XML data integration projects. Our new integrated XQuery development support for Saxon reinforces our leadership position as the XML IDE innovator," said Ivan Pedruzzi, Stylus Studio's Senior Product architect. "The Stylus Studio user community demanded support for Saxon, which has a strong reputation as being the technology leader in XSLT and XQuery processor component technologies. We're responsive to our users — we’ve provided a built-in XQuery processor from day one, and we're pleased to now offer integrated support for Saxon. And we pledge to maintain and develop additional support for the Saxon developer community in the future."

XQuery (XML Query) is an emerging XML standard being developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to provide a flexible, standards-based mechanism for querying, integrating, and transforming data from distributed data sources on the Web. Stylus Studio is the first and only XML IDE to provide comprehensive support for XQuery development. Stylus Studio's extensible product architecture enables XML programmers to develop XQuery and XSLT applications using any major XML processor, including Saxon. Users can also easily configure Stylus Studio to use any third-party processor they choose.

Stylus Studio's XQuery development support includes tools such as:

  • XQuery Editor — Full support for editing and testing any XQuery expression.
  • XQuery Mapper — Intuitive drag-and-drop lets you create XQuery without writing any code: create a link between elements in two XML documents, choose from the processing options suggested by Stylus Studio, and run the XQuery. The XQuery Source window lets you see the code as Stylus Studio creates it.
  • XQuery Profiler — Benchmark and tune advanced XQuery expressions using customizable performance metrics. Use the standard report, or use Stylus Studio's data to create your own.
  • XQuery Debugger — Set breakpoints and step through the evaluation of any XQuery expression to locate and eliminate XQuery errors.
  • XQuery Scenarios — See how your XQuery performs against a variety of input and output documents, set parameter values, and configure Profiling options.

Stylus Studio's benchmark support for XSLT includes many of the same tools features provided for XQuery, including support for the Saxon XSLT processor:

  • XSLT Editor — A truly XSLT-centric and highly productive editing module for XSLT development.
  • XSLT Mapper — Create XSLT graphically, using intuitive drag-and-drop to define xsl:for-each, xsl:value-of, and other XSLT statements. View the XSLT Stylus Studio creates while you map.
  • XSLT Profiler — Record performance metrics such as call tree execution time, execution time by XSL element, or log step-by-step execution times.
  • WYSIWYG XSLT — Visually develop XSLT stylesheets to transform XML to HTML.
  • XSLT Debugger — Eliminate bugs from any XSLT stylesheet. Debugging features let you watch variables, Call Stack and Backmap Stack windows display processing history and let you quickly jump back into the code.
  • XSLT Scenarios — Use scenarios to specify parameters and post-processing options, processors (including Saxon, Xalan-J, and MSXML .NET), and Profiling options.

About Saxon and Saxonica

Saxon was first released as an open source product in 1998, and has consistently maintained technology leadership and market share. It was the first conformant implementation of XSLT 1.0, and is currently the only implementation of XSLT 2.0. XQuery support, using the same proven run-time engine, was added in 2003. The product features regularly in the top 100 open source downloads, with over 3000 users moving to the latest 8.0 version in the five weeks after it was announced.

Saxonica Limited (http://www.saxonica.com) was set up early in 2004 to continue the development of Saxon and provide support to its many users. The company's first commercial product, Saxon-SA, adds XML Schema support within the existing XSLT and XQuery engine, making it the first component to combine these three vital technologies in a single package.
