I perhaps foolishly chose "Data Binding Interop" for my first session to see if anything had changed. I was rewarded with echoes of 2000, with more emphasis on structure and less emphasis on type obsession. Instead of arguments between vendors it was arguments among framework creators. I looked a few times to Jeni Tennison and Norm Walsh for confirmation that we'd been here before. All very interesting. Thanks. It's funny how most of us back then also predicted that this would be a perma-debate in Web circles, I guess as ever, it boils down to the bohemian origins of markup, Epicurean, if you like, and the gentry who seized on markup and tried to make it their own, and to wrestle it into their strictly Aristotelian view of the universe.
I do want to say that the idea of data binding does not have to be a gentrified one. There are alternatives to pre-structured object models, as I've been exploring for a decade in my Amara XML tools. But as you suggest it takes a language flexible enough to go beyond such structures. Amara's data binding is based on Python's duck "typing" (I'd rather say non-typing) and though it's still a data binding as I'd define the term, it bears very little resemblance to its strongly-typed namesakes.
