well it's far too early to say. You might look at TeX distributions
moving to e-tex where even after almost 20 years the changeover is
just now really taking hold.


It's probably the wrong question in any case.

Comparing with xml 1.0 5th edition is probably a closer analogy. Most
users don't care much and don't use the new features, but they do let
their systems update, or after 2 or 3 years they buy new systems.

So the order of events probably is that

1) systems quietly switch to the updated spec.
2) users either don't notice or hold back using the new features for
compatibility reasons.
3) after a few years everyone who is using the system at all has the new
version, so the compatibility reasons for not using the new features
go away.
4) people start using the new features.
5) at this point you discover a couple of legacy systems that never
updated. they either update or the users switch, or they are important
enough to maintain an island of "version 1 use" (cf browser use of XSLT 1)

So basically ask again in say 2022 and see how things turned out.
(with a bit of luck by then everyone will have stopped using xsd and
we'll all be using relaxng:-)
