Regarding the advantage of using a hardware appliance: These appliances typically include specialize processors that enable acceleration of specific types of processing. Tarari processors dramatically improve validation and transformation processing nCypher processors dramatically improve XML encryption and signature processing. Note, though, that the Reactivity appliance doesn't rely on a Tarari-like processor for its XML process acceleration capabilities. (It does uses eCypher to accelerate encryption.) Reactivity implements its XML process acceleration technology entirely in software. It uses a specialized OS and XML processor. My guess is this is the reason Cisco acquired Reactivity rather than one of the other players -- they can just load it into a AON blade and go. (Well I'm sure some tweaking will be necessary -- but no specialized hardware required.)
