In XPath 2.0: the sequence of elements named "a", in document order, whose typed value is disjoint from the typed value of all following elements named "x" (where "disjoint" means that the typed values have no item in common - the typed value of an element is in general a list of atomic values). In your example, the set consisting of the 4th, 6th, and 7th "a" elements. (Note that the xsl-list at www.mulberrytech.com is the best place for XPath and XSLT questions).
