We already have XPath to describe sets of nodes and XML schema languages to describe sets of documents. Schematron demonstrates that XPath can be used as a schema language and I believe that there are more similarities than we use to think between these two. If we could rely on what's already there (and eventually extend it) to describe a document (which is basically a set of nodes and the unique member of a set of documents composed of himself), that could probably be a good thing!
