New Educational Videos Demonstrate Standards-Based Approach to Data Integration and Web Publishing using SQL/XML, XSLT, and Stylus Studio XML IDE

Bedford, Mass.July 26, 2004 — Stylus Studio (http://www.stylusstudio.com), the leading provider of powerful development tools for XML technologies including XML, XSL, XSLT, XML Schema, Web services, SQL/XML, and XQuery, today released two new educational videos for the XML developer community. These videos demonstrate how easy it is to create industry-standard SQL/XML to access relational data and render it as XML using Stylus Studio DB-to-XML Data Sources. The Working with Relational Data as XML series of videos shows two methods for creating these powerful data sources, and how they can be reused in Stylus Studio anywhere you might use XML, such as in the creation of an XSLT stylesheet using Stylus Studio's intuitive WYSIWYG XSLT Designer. The new videos are freely available from the video section of the Stylus Studio website.

The new educational XML videos cover the following topics:

  • Creating a data source from a relational database (a DB-to-XML Data Source) using the Stylus Studio DB-to-XML Editor
  • Connecting to Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, IBM DB/2, Sybase, Informix, Progress or any ODBC-compliant relational database
  • Browsing database objects such as tables, views, and columns from Stylus Studio
  • Visually specifying relational database-to-XML mappings
  • Generating SQL and SQL/XML SELECT statements with the Stylus Studio SQL/XML Editor
  • Querying and extracting relational database data as XML using SQL/XML and SQL
  • Modifying SQL/XML code to create custom result documents containing both XML elements and attributes
  • Previewing and saving the results of an SQL/XML query
  • Visually developing an XSLT stylesheet using a live DB-to-XML Data Source to generate an HTML report

"Our customers are amazed when they see how easy it is to integrate and publish relational data using XML technologies and Stylus Studio — these are must-see video for database developers working with XML," said Ivan Pedruzzi, Stylus Studio's Senior Product Architect. "We're re-doubling our efforts to produce practical, educational media for our rapidly growing user community of XML developers, and they can look forward to more additions to our video series over time."

SQL/XML is an extension of the SQL standard that allows you to query relational data and render the results as XML. Stylus Studio provides several ways to connect to any relational database and to develop and query relational data sources. The eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT) is a standard language developed by the W3C for transforming XML documents into other formats, like HTML.

Stylus Studio's powerful, standards-based approach to database-to-XML mapping provides visual SQL/XML editing and testing features for creating data sources from relational databases and saving them as XML, as well as several visual XML mapping, XSLT stylesheet, and XQuery design tools that can employ these and other XML data sources as inputs for sophisticated XML publishing applications. Unlike other tools vendors who rely on overly-complex and un-scalable DOM programming techniques, and who require proprietary class libraries, Stylus Studio’s approach to database-to-XML mapping instead uses only industry-standard SQL/XML and other XML technologies, resulting in the most scalable, intuitive, and cost-effective solution for the increasingly encountered requirement of getting relational data into an XML format!
