Microsoft Releases Device Profile for Web Services

A new Devices Profile for Web Services entitled A Proposal for UPnP 2.0 Device Architecture by Jeffrey Schlimmer (Microsoft) defines a specification to enable secure Web service messaging, discovery, description, and eventing on mobile devices. The new XML-Web service based specification was jointly authored with Intel, Lexmark, and Ricoh, and features a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) architecture.

The new specification enables ISVs to leverage existing XML development tools when building custom device applications, and allows IT departments to leverage a rich Web Services infrastructure based on SOAP and XML. The Devices Profile represents a new foundation for application protocols; it frees vendors and their standards organizations to concentrate on designing messages for specific device classes. The well-factored architecture and significant extensibility of the Device Profile enables as-yet-unforeseen messaging patterns, transports, metadata, and capabilities and requirements. Namespaces are provided for several WS-* specifications used in the Devices Profile, in addition to XML Schema, SOAP, and WSDL: the unpublished Web Services Metadata Transfer (WS-MetadataTransfer), WS-Addressing, WS-Discovery, WS-Eventing, and WS-Policy.

Commenting on the significance of the new Web Services standard, Carlo Innocenti, Stylus Studio's senior product architect said: "This is yet another example of how the worlds of distributed and embedded computing worlds are converging on XML based Web Service technologies to deliver an exciting new class of more open and connected applications. Stylus Studio's powerful support for standards-based XML and Web Services software development, along with Web Service standards for devices help make these the dream of advanced distributed & embedded applications a reality."
