Programmers certainly blew their chances — XML was being pushed for circumstances unsuited to its position in life, and programmers were dismayed to find that it wasn't a programming language per se; that there was no compiler which produced a binary executable. Don't forget this was in a time when markup was largely a non-existent concept in most CS courses (still is in some places), so when you explained that they shouldn't expect to be able to execute a novel, you just got blank stares. Not entirely their fault: they just want to be able to write programs, and unless those programs were going to need to open up text documents, XML really wasn't a candidate, and should not have been touted as one. ///Peter
