Re: Software lock in?
Hi all,

I realize this discussion went a little quiet after the on-topic vs. off-topic emails, however, I saw this today via Twitter and thought it was of a similar, but more startling vein. I thought I’d share it here, again as this is a forum of smart people who might be able to collectively work against the kinds of lock-in we were talking about earlier:

https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2017/04/garadget-sabotage/521937/

I’m wondering about when the ethics of interoperability and interconnectedness (by XML or other technologies) intersect with the raw capabilities of a platform or business model. Is this the modern version of DRM? Should we care, and is there anything we can do about it? If there was, what would it be?

Maybe the days of the month-long discussions are over on this list, but thought it was worth bringing up in case you hadn’t seen it.

Cheers,

ast
