Re:  Re: Balisage 2017
I wish I could think of something helpful to do or say. I can think of plenty of *un* helpful things:

DC's airports, which I have found pretty creepy since 9/11, are now less inviting than ever.

Thoughts of the Old Post Office, and the traffic it's likely to see, chill my core.

I keep wondering, can the Deep State save us?

These are idle, unconstitutional thoughts; in the hope of avoiding the worst of the coming ugliness, I grasp at straws. I, for one, do not *want* to be saved by the Deep State; the rule of men is not on my shopping list. I prefer the rule of law.

Mike is right: "... one has to make a stand." The sensation of having UK support withdrawn is unfamiliar to Americans. I hope the experience will be salutary for us, and that we will choose to react constructively, and not obnoxiously.

I hope Balisage will survive the crisis in one way or another. It's far too constructive to risk losing it. If no other means are conscionable/affordable during the crisis, perhaps electronically, in multiple venues?

Hi Mike —

Balisage 2017 is coming, and I think it may be an especially interesting year for Saxonica. The pre-conference symposium will be about Up Translation or Up Transformation. I expect many of the talks to be about XSLT.

Will you please consider sponsoring Balisage this year? And, as weird as the political situation is here, I would like to encourage you to think about coming this year;
Thank you Tommie for the invitation. I would love to come to Balisage again. But I don't think this is the right time to be applying for a visa, and I don't think it's appropriate to sponsor a conference held in a country that will exclude people from attending on grounds of race or religion. Sorry, but I think one has to make a stand.

Perhaps you can move back to Montreal in 2018?
