Want to Make an Impact on the World?

Today it is nearly impossible to solve any non-trivial language recognition problem without embedding code into the grammar. In the example above we saw that we needed to embed XPath code in XML Schema, Java code in ANTRL, and C code in BISON. And that was for a trivial problem.

Want to make a huge impact on the world? Fix this problem. No more embedded code in grammars.

This problem has been fixed in FXSL since the very first version of its generic f:lrParse() function, as can be seen here:

<xsl:function name="f:lrParse" as="element()*">
 <xsl:param name="ppTables" as="element()"/>
 <xsl:param name="pInput" as="xs:string*"/>
 <xsl:param name="pFunLex" as="element()"/>
 <xsl:param name="pFunOnRuleReduced" as="element()"/>

<xsl:sequence select=
 "fLRaux:lrParse($ppTables,$pInput,1,
                 (),(0),(),
                 $pFunLex,$pFunOnRuleReduced
                )"/>
 </xsl:function>

As can be seen, the reaction to the reduction (recognition) of any grammar rule is provided in a *function*, which is passed as a parameter.

This means that the same grammar can be parsed and used in many different ways, simply by passing a different function as the value of the parameter pFunOnRuleReduced, on each different call to the function f:lrParse().
