Note that you don't get an end tag for the outermost element if you disconnect, of course - true for all these protocols. When the Jabber people contacted me early on I suggested they use a stream of smaller documents, one per message. Another approach is to have a second URI that, when accessed, will end the stream and disconnect from the server end.
