Great question.

One of the really great things about the XML community is that researchers, product developers, and users all go to the same conferences, and of those, Balisage is definitely the leader. If you're into theory and you're mainly interested in getting academic brownie points for publishing a paper that no-one will ever read, certainly outside academia, then by all means submit to VLDB. But if you want to know what products are being developed and the innovative ways in which they are being used, or if you're a user and want to know what the researchers are up to, or if you want your theoretical advances to be picked up by product developers and to make a difference in the world, then come to Balisage. That kind of community interaction simply doesn't exist in the database world.
