In 2004, UTF-8 was a noise encoding on the Web: see <http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2012/02/unicode-over-60-percent-of-web.html>. Â As of the beginning of 2012, it was more than 60% of the documents visible to Google. Â If you count pure ASCII documents as UTF-8, which you can do, it's up at 80%.
