the "repeating" bit is what means Michael's comment doesn't apply. That 
regexp is not trying to parse xml it;s trying to tokenize it to match 
tags. It is not for example trying to match begin and end tags (which is 
not possible with a regular language).

However it isn't trying to parse xml at all but some rather mre lax 
xml/html/sgml-ish tag soup syntax,

as noted in the comments it explicitly tries to parse unquoted attribute 
values such as huz=123  which are not well formed in XML and should 
return a fatal parse error.
