As a short postscript: On 7th Sept, I shipped an XML editor, XMLQuire,
with the aim of getting feedback on the concept of Virtual Formatting.

Even with 250+ day 1 downloads, there has been minimal feedback with
respect to Virtual Formatting. There was at least some limited
interest in porting this Windows-only 'proof of concept' to other
platforms, not enough sadly to justify attempting to harness the
resources that would be required.
