Thanks John. Are you implying an author side commit before main project merge? I need something simple that scales to the small because the distribution end requires only valid XML and the graphics to PDF: a simple task if the tagging system isn't driving up the costs, a specialized knowledge vs automation tradeoff over time to delivery from first prototype. They're using file systems as databases. A lot can be done but the discipline required implies a deeper skill with XML than most people have, so getting a reliable multi-authoring system up that convinces them Word is not the right idea is important. Spending authoring cycles on format that gets thrown away at delivery feels pathetic. For my dog food, I have to remember CALS. Sort the original work left undone. Logistics 101 again. len -----Original Message----- From: John Cowan [mailto:cowan@ccil.org] On Behalf Of John Cowan Sent: Friday, September 16, 2011 7:26 PM To: Len Bullard Cc: xml-dev@lists.xml.org Subject: Re: Is CVS A Practical Means to Manage XML Versions In AProduction Environment Len Bullard scripsit: > Assembling a free to near free environment for multiple authors > working on multiple projects where some must be able to simultaneously > edit then merge XML and illustrations, is free CVS a practical means? I'd recommend free Mercurial or Git or one of the other distributed version-control systems. Their main advantage is that you can commit changes to your local repository, independently of pushing them to the server. -- I Hope, Sir, that we are not John Cowan mutually Un-friended by this cowan@ccil.org Difference which hath happened http://www.ccil.org/~cowan betwixt us. --Thomas Fuller, Appeal to Injured Innocence _______________________________________________________________________ XML-DEV is a publicly archived, unmoderated list hosted by OASIS to support XML implementation and development.
