1. I'd bet Walter rather than Len. 2. My swag at the best choice would be the textual equivalent of single precision IEEE floating point. At this late date, any system that uses something besides IEEE floating point is strictly legacy. Depending on what the community was about, double precision might be necessary. However I'm so old that back in slide rule days I had many a professor talk at length about the difference between precision and accuracy.
