Elements defined to be void (like img) do not take an end tag so they can be written equivalently as <img/> or <img> but not as <img></img> If you look at something like <p/> then in xml that denotes an empty p element but in html5 it's non conforming, but parses in the same way as <p> that is, it parses as a start tag.
