And companies that do a lot engineering work and must pass analysis files around could really do with a well-known-standard-with-lots-tools format. These files are big, 100MB being on the low end. The binary HDF5 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchical_Data_Format has filled this role for many years in the engineering domain. And has recently benefited from being selected as an international standard ISO 10303-26 (part 26)
