Rick, A lot of users do care how XBRL instance documents look and there are efforts underway to address XBRL content in an HTML document - see Inline XBRL (Rendering) Specification - CR - CALL FOR IMPLEMENTATIONS here - http://www.xbrl.org/SpecCRs/. However, XBRL is all about the data. It is ABSOLUTELY DATA CENTRIC. The close to 500 public companies that have filed with the SEC in the last 2 months tagged something north of 100 unique values per filing. Next year at this time, that will increase 10 fold as the second wave requires "detail tagging". I understand that in some countries - Belgium - they only want the tagged data and have passed on the presentation layer. I am not sure that we should call XBRL an accounting language. Isn't it more limited than that, aiming to be a system for modelling and reporting financial summary information, e.g. to regulators or tax offices? So it XBRL documents might not have masses of numeric data. Furthermore, the XBRL people worked on a way of having XBRL embedded in HTML documents, to make it workable for a wider range of adopters. If you need to have text and formatting to make a format useful, I guess there are limits to how "datacentric" we can call it.
