Sorry for using the wrong terminology.... (I've been corrected off list!)

The things I'm talking about are entities like & nbsp; &mdash; etc
versus parameter entities like [dtd] and %HTMLlat1

For the parameter entities the start and end events have other events
between them, for entities like mdash they don't and therefore I can't
see how to process their expanded values.
