It is common practice for programmers to name variables in numerous non-helpful ways, it is best practice to have a well thought out naming scheme that allows those who maintain code to know what a variable is to be used for, hopefully achievable by following the coding styles for their languages and organizations, and it is a convention just to use some form of camel casing and a generally unhelpful hint as to what data type the variable is when in the process of naming the variable in a non-helpful way. Note that this definition is somewhat unfair to convention, as it shows the bad usage of convention. But I think it is better to focus on the bad usage of convention then to imply that convention is best.
