You can check whether validation has been performed using "instance of"

if (airplane instance of schema-element(airplane)) then ...

Or in XSLT you can do it more declaratively:

<xsl:template match="document-node(schema-element(airplane))">
   normal case
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="/">
  error case
</xsl:template>
