My new favorite text editor has numerous ways to view and handle
such problems. And it's small, fast, and free:
  http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

After you open the file, go to Plugins | Hex editor | View in hex
to find out what the char is. Or get rid of it with TextFX |
Characters | Zap all non-printable to #. There are probably more
options, these are just the obvious ones.

Enjoy!
