Dave, You could take a look at xchecker (which was written to do this sort of thing) - it would be no problem to convert the assert to a global xpath to do what you need, which could be a useful temporary measure until 1.1 is ready. http://xchecker.sf.net/ see section 5. (...I haven't looked at the code in a long time (or in fact used it since the time I had the need for it) so maybe treat it as an example of whats possible.)
