I'm looking forward to reading your book, Juliane! One of the factors that influences this is how you propose to do validation. Before assembling the components, after assembling them, or both? XInclude is certainly a bit more flexible than entities, because it's easier to control whether and when you process the includes. But if your processing of the documents is all done using XSLT, then XInclude doesn't buy you much that you couldn't do easily for yourself. But obviously if you're using docbook, then do what fits in with docbook.
