Actually it is more likely the ease of it. If you close a system, you lose all of the complexity of consensus. OpenGL is available to lots of people. Do you credit Microsoft's dominance of the desktop market to DirectX? People love eye candy. What 3D doesn't really improve is text heavy applications which is what a majority of desktop applications are and why XML is a success there. In 3D, XML is mostly in the way with the exception that it provides standard and familiar means to query and transform.
