Hi,
I think Jaxen [1] is good enough for that purpose ; I used it in Active
Tags [2] and RefleX [3] for browsing various objects, such as a file
system :
$dir//*[@io:is-file][@io:extension='xml']
(guess what you should get)
[1] http://jaxen.org/
[2] http://disc.inria.fr/perso/philippe.poulard/xml/active-tags/
[3] http://reflex.gforge.inria.fr/
