probably just need to check if it has a value before you do something with it:

if (chhh.getFirstChild().getNodeValue()) {
//do a print
System.out.println("NodeType 1" +chhh.getFirstChild().getNodeValue());
applicationArrayList.add(chhh.getFirstChild().getNodeValue());
}
