I think that is the case precisely. Although Topic Maps now have the alternative subject maps and the bifurcation begins anew. The CG list has Conceptual Graphs as a notation and I often wonder if all of these don't have some commons for standardization. The problem, of course, is to get a commons that has the simplicity and easy applicability that it gets used quickly because it is useful quickly.
