Yeah, but then you'd miss out on all those cool angle brackets... ;)

Mike does have a good point here.  What are you trying to do exactly and
why wouldn't something like diff, bazaar-ng, CVS, subversion, etc. do
the job?  These already exist and are stable to varying degrees, and
already deal with a number of the questions Mike is raising.

I just threw in my reference because I happened to run across it, not
because I knew what you were trying to accomplish.
