For background material on anyURI in XSD see http://www.w3.org/2000/12/xmlschema-crcomments.html#pfiIURI anyURI was needed because of the tardiness in the IRI specification. Also, it was strongly felt that people expect and need a URI to be the thing you can cut and paste from the address bar in a browser.
