Hi.

I've had some experience with digester (it was chosen by a dev team where I work for a project I interact with).  It works but I can't say I highly recommend it.  It has a custom XML format for specifying how your input XML is instantiated as java objects.  It's kind of sax-y but also re-invent-the-wheel-y.  I've never used it to spit out XML, I'm not sure it does that.

If I were going to do this myself the first thing I'd look at is betwixt (an apache project).

SOAP and JOX could both be useful in some cases but it sounds like your requirement to be able to specify the mapping would make either of those too restrictive for you.

I also think that hibernate can map to XML, not sure how configurable the map is.
