Hello Rich:

Process Control comes to my mind.  Now that many engineers have been
convinced that Ethernet switches are deterministic enough to be trusted to
operate moving machinery without causing grief and harm to equipment and
people, 4-20 ma loops are being abandoned for Ethernet based control
devices.  Plus there are more controller area network (CAN) designs being
deployed in automobiles and the like everyday.  Then there was that
refrigerator with a browser....

A search on "microcontroller Ethernet application" will bring up some
articles, but mostly links to vendor products.  This is one link, not that I
endorse it over any other:

nomyID=6205.  But you will get the drift.  Still, XML is not yet the
language of choice for inter-process communications in these real-time
applications.
