You could alo use Perl in this case -- perl -p -e 's{<booktitle>(.*?)</booktitle>}{<em class="booktitle">$1</em>}g' The .*? means "shortest match", so as to avoid problms if you have more than one booktitle element. However, if you're doing any significant amount of XML processing, you'll find XSLT worth learning. It's a declarative almost-functional language, in many ways similar to Scheme.
