Moreover, the RELAX NG compact syntax specification explicitly
mentions XML Schema Datatypes as the predefined binding for
xsd: prefix. And it is the only datatype prefix defined for RelaxNG.

I too think that grass could be greener, but the reality is that
RelaxNG relies on W3C XML Schema part 2, practicaly in the same
way as XQuery does.
