MIT is a sufficiently big client and with enough network gurus that problems are looked at and diagnosed really fast when this happen. Also MIT is on the Internet2 backbone and I think then has a really high speed connection to other universities worldwide (i.e. mirroring the archives should be doable without much troubles).
