If it was two clean pieces, one for structure and one for content, I
could probably accept that situation, but asking developers to use or
understand one language to define structure and some fraction of a
competing language (with very different syntax and application) for
content is just plain weird.

"mind-bogglingly annoying" seems like an adequate description of the
situation, even for those of us who aren't using XML Schema.  The
separation between structure and content description is critical, but
the "spare parts left over" approach seems like a bad idea generally.
