Bingo.   One of the first and primary 
reasons for going to markup was to free 
information from the application.  It is 
a principle that should be in the preface 
of every book that teaches XML.  It isn't 
about separating content from formatting, 
but data from process, and information from 
the processor.

I want to it to be possible for me to work with a textual representation of that
information asset. Otherwise, I don't own it - it is owned by
the app that created it. Bad.

GUIs are perhaps the biggest culprit in lulling people into
handing over true ownership of their information assets.
