XQuery needs to know about integers, floats, strings, etc. The built-in types of XML Schema are used not only by XML Schema, but also by many RELAX-NG applications, RDF, the SQL/XML mappings being defined by the ANSI/ISO SQLX committee, etc. When these data types are so widely accepted, it just makes sense to support them.
