I think you highlighted the distinction perfectly. QNames represent a blurring of markup rules and document content. Imagine if, for instance I did this: <test value="<int>44</int>" /> Even if I declared "value" to be of type "XMLContent" or some such, I don't think it would quiet the howls of dismay.
