Instead of a simple hash table that maps character codes to entities, you have to have a trie. I also see a slippery slope opening up here: Yes I know, sorry:-) But I thought I'd better speak up since mathml was being used as a use case. Actually it wouldn't be so bad if the entities were single characters and we dropped ≦̸ and made people write ≦&negationslash; or something, however you wouldn't be able to cover the old ISO entity names using that scheme. (Does that still matter, I wonder?)
