It started out as a simple subset of "SGML for the Web", and now the total mass of XML specification (infrastructure, not the applications) is significantly greater than SGML+HyTime+DSSSL, which were considered far too complex for anyone other than hyper-specialists to understand. It is a bit unfair to simply compare the two piles of virtual paper; XML *is* more modular than SGML. It's definitely an advance over SGML (which was my point), but it -- in my very humble and personal opinion -- will continue to be subsetted, refactored, tweaked, and added to again for a couple more iterations before it is really stable.
