User Profiles

Does anyone have any suggestions for schemas to use for storing/sharing user
profiles and preferences ? I've looked at the Customer Profile Exchange XML
but the spec is more about the object model than the XML so its rather
difficult to grasp what the XML is supposed to look like. There is also not
a lot of traffic on the discussion boards so its hard to get any help.
Something with good subsidiary resources would be appreciated.
