xml over rmi
There's lots to be said for XML in the proper role, but I must admit, as a
"metal" programmer (and an old one at that), I do place some value on
interface performance and so do my customers.
If CORBA and RMI aren't fast enough, SOAP doesn't stand a prayer.
Yes, interoperability is great, but at what price? And semantic issues still
exist, and always will. I still find it ironic that a markup language whose
greatest virtue at one point was touted as its "human readability" is
finding its way more and more into machine to machine interfaces.

XML is also no longer "simple"- ask anyone who is a newbie to the area and
is still trying to figure out the role of it and its plethora of
accompanying standards. "X" will soon be the most feared letter of the
alphabet.

I'm not complaining, mind you. I think XML and its ever-burgeoning family
of relatives will keep me gainfully employed for several years yet. And as
processors continue to get faster/cheaper and so does bandwidth, efficiency
may become a bygone concern. As you so aptly put it, it's a matter of
trade-offs. But XML is no panacea, and I'm a little afraid that with the XML
hammer, all problems are becoming mark-up nails.

Linda
