You first have to differntiate between what Microsoft calls "XML Schemas" and what the W3C calls "XML Schemas". If the Microsoft web-pages or MSDN documentation talks about XML Schemas, they currently are mostly talking about a simplified version of the schema dialect proposed in the "XML Data" note submitted to the W3C in January 1998 (http://www.w3.org/TR/1998/NOTE-XML-data/) that is commonly referred to as the "XML Data Reduced" or short XDR Schema dialect today. This XDR schema dialect (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/psdk/xmlsdk/xmls5gkl.htm) is also used as the basis for BizTalk (http://www.biztalk.org) and Microsoft is constantly augmenting this in newer releases of their MSXML parser component. Microsoft has, however, said that they would eventually migrate BizTalk to the new W3C XML Schemas once they are finalized. What is nowadays called an "XML Schema" by the W3C, is specified by the "XML Schema Definition Language" and defined by the "XML Schema Part 1: Structures" document (http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-1/) and the "XML Schema Part 2: Data Structures" document (http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-2/) which are currently in "last call draft" state. These are expected to become the XML Schema standard in the future, but it will still take some time until this becomes a W3C recommendation. The other question is what you mean by "support". There are many simple XML tools available for the Windows PC that use the MSXML parser provided by Microsoft and thus can validate an XML document against an XDR schema. On the other hand there are professional tools, such as XML Spy 3.0 (http://www.xmlspy.com), that not only can validate against both XDR and the new April 7 draft of the W3C XML Schemas, but also provide the ability to edit both schema kinds, convert DTDs to schemas, convert between different dialects, and generate schemas from example XML documents. Subject: Current Status of XML Schemas ... I am interested in knowing the current status of XML Schemas, from non-Microsoft viewpoint! Are there any non-Microsoft products that support XML schemas ? I would appreciate receiving some more info about XML Schema resources, web-pagest. *************************************************************************** This is xml-dev, the mailing list for XML developers.
