What I've been doing for the past few months is organizing a group of physicians and technologists into the "OpenHealth Group" which is developing an open source XML based healthcare system. The basis for this is the XML work I've been doing for the past couple of years. At some point this org may desire W3C membership but for the time being it is hard to justify the expense. The HL7 group does get involved in OASIS etc, but the problem is that HL7 XML has been talked about now for years and it will certainly be several more years before it is widely implemented (that is once V3.0 is done and out :-) In the meantime there are lots of very cool things that can be done with XML and XSLT.
