This is the nicest solution yet ... if you're handlers depend
on String.intern() and the parser doesn't guarantee that, then
slip an intern'ing adapter around the parser.

But shouldn't the marked line read,

 if (!namesAreInterned)
   xmlReader = new SAXInterner(xmlReader);
